Tesco stores to open 24 hours during the Olympics

Tesco has announced that it is to open 200 of its largest stores for up to 24 hours on Sundays during the London 2012 Olympics.

The news follows the confirmation from Asda last week that it would extend the opening hours of some of its branches during the Games, including 24-hour opening at five stores near the Olympic Park in London’s Stratford.

Tesco said it will open “the majority” of its 200 Extra shops for 24 hours from 22 July, and could extend the opening hours at other stores.

A spokesman for the supermarket said: “We’ve listened to what our customers and our staff have told us about Sunday opening hours during the Games.

“They would like to see more flexibility, so we plan to open our stores across England and Wales for longer. Our Extra stores will be open for 24 hours, while Superstores and selected Metros will open for extended hours.”
