Supermarket operator ahead on all fronts
November 26 2002
Tesco saw group sales rise by 10.5 per cent in the fourteen weeks to November 16.
The UK’s biggets retailer said growth was driven by all four parts of its strategy: a continued strong performance in the core and increasingly competitive UK grocery market, growing non-food sales, a strong international performance and the success of retailing services such as its financial offer.
Total UK sales for the quarter were up 7.3 per cent, with like-for-like sales up 3.8 per cent. The company said: “We have continued to see deflation, reflecting our determination to deliver the best value for our customers.” International sales were up 29 per cent.
Tesco said it will create more than 25,000 jobs worldwide this year, taking its total workforce over 285,000.
