Tesco rolls out free Wi-Fi at Extra stores

Supermarket giant Tesco has rolled out its free Wi-Fi service nationwide following a successful in-store trial.

Customers with Clubcard numbers shopping in any of Tesco’s Extra stores now have free, unlimited access.  Those without Clubcards are able to use the service for 15 minutes every 24 hours.

Tesco said that customers have been accessing the service to read product reviews and compare prices while they shop. The Wi-Fi also allows users to access their Clubcard account online to check their points and receive e-vouchers.

Mike McNamara, chief information officer at Tesco, said: “We’re proud to be the first UK supermarket to offer nationwide access to free Wi-Fi. People are increasingly using a variety of digital services and we’re excited by our customers’ reaction to the new service.”

A recent survey of Tesco customers found that 82% said they would definitely use the service again. It also revealed that 71% of customers access the Wi-Fi via smartphone, 11% via a tablet and 9% on a laptop.

The Wi-Fi solution is being provided by Telefónica UK, based on O2 Wifi’s technology platform.
