Tesco Mobile targets c-store customers
500,000 customers already on board
Tesco plans to strongly promote its Tesco Mobile joint venture in its convenience stores during 2005 as it drives to build on a strong start to the venture.
Tesco Mobile. a joint venture with MM02, has signed up more than 500,000 customers in its first 14 months, the UK’s biggest retailer has reported. Customers can currently sign up online, or through Tesco’s 500 UK supermarkets.
Andy Dewhurst, chief executive of Tesco Mobile. said: “We are trialling the sale of SIM cards in some of Tesco’s smaller stores and initial feedback from customers is positive.” SIM card sales are understood to have been trialled in 10 Tesco Express stores, with plans to roll out offers suitable for the c-store market to express stores over the next 12 months.
Confirming that Tesco Mobile signed up its half millionth customer in the run-up to Christmas, Matthew Key, Tesco Mobile chairman and chief financial officer of O2 UK, said: “This is a great milestone to achieve in such a short space of time. Tesco Mobile has gone from strength to strength this year.”
