Tesco launches Christmas recruitment drive

12,000 extra staff needed by UK’s biggest retailer
September 24 2003
Tesco aims to recruit 12,000 extra staff for the busy Christmas period.

The UK’s leading retailer has increased its temporary Christmas employee intake to help serve busy Christmas shoppers. New staff will boost Tesco’s status as the UK’s largest employer, joining 220,000 employees to ensure seasonal consumer demands are met. Tesco revealed last week that it now has a 12 per cent share of the total UK retail market, a figure it will be aiming to increase in the run-up to Christmas.
The new roles are being targeted at working parents, students and mature workers, aged 50 and above. All recruits will be offered flexible working arrangements enabling employees to juggle commitments between work and home life.
The new staff will be employed across Tesco’s 780 stores, with more jobs being created behind the scenes and on the shop floor to support Tesco’s round-the-clock operations. An increase in checkout staff, bag-packers, customer service, stock replenishment and dot.com pickers will help meet the demands of the busy shopper in the run-up to Christmas and beyond.
Tesco retail director David Potts, said: “Our stores are getting busier and over Christmas and the New Year they’re at their most hectic. These new jobs mean more hands on deck at the busiest time of the shopping year to help customers.
“We want shoppers to leave our stores smiling. That means guaranteeing all the Christmas trimmings are available and extra staff are on hand to help, making seasonal shopping easier and stress-free.”
