Tesco gets planning consent for new distribution warehouse
Tesco has secured planning consent for a 900,000 sq ft distribution warehouse in Reading.
The development on a former Heineken Brewery site will create around 1,000 jobs. Tesco said it has already received over 800 expressions of interest for the jobs, which range from managerial staff, drivers, mechanics, warehouse operatives and maintenance staff. The construction phase of the project would also provide more than 150 jobs.
As well as the ambient food distribution centre, the proposals also include a vehicle maintenance unit and a number of enhancements to the landscape around the site.
Tesco said the building will constructed to high environmental standards to help it achieve its target of becoming a zero-carbon business by 2050. The building will emit 34% less Co2 than the levels imposed by 2010 building regulations.
Speaking after the announcement James Wiggam from Tesco said: “We have worked closely with the local community and council to develop these proposals and have been overwhelmed by the positive response to them. We’re particularly honoured that so many people have already shown an interest in the jobs and look forward to working with Job Centre plus to deliver these jobs to local people.”
Tesco hopes to open the new warehouse by Christmas 2012.
