Tesco gets go-ahead for new store and homes development
Tesco has been given the green light for a swathe of development in Bexleyheath after plans for a new Extra store were approved, along with an application for 126 new homes.
The new 80,000 ft store will be built on the former site of the Bexleyheath Civic Office, which Tesco acquired in 2011. In addition to the new store, Tesco will create a further three retail units, remodel the public realm creating a pedestrian plaza and deliver a community area which is expected to house the Citizens’ Advice Bureau and Bexley Voluntary Services.
Bexley Council will relocate its offices to a building on Watling Street where Tesco has had a separate application approved to deliver 126 new homes. The new residential developments will comprise 48 family houses and 79 apartments, to be built in four, four-storey blocks. Approximately twenty per cent of the new residential units, all of will be built adjacent to the new Bexley Civic Office, will be affordable homes.
Matt Magee, Corporate Affairs Manager at Tesco, said,“We have been committed to investing in Bexleyheath for some time and we have worked with local residents, groups and the Council over a number of years to shape our proposals, which we now look forward to delivering.”
The new Tesco store and other retail units will create 370 new full and part-time jobs to the area, many of which will go to local people.
Bellway will partner with Tesco to deliver the 126 homes.
