Tesco Cars closes after 12 months

Supermarket giant Tesco has closed its second-hand cars website just a year after it was launched.

The Tesco Cars website, which offered thousands of used cars for sale, is being wound down due the retailer being unable to procure “a good supply of cars”.

The website’s business model involved buying ex-fleet stock to sell on to the supermarket’s 16 million customers. However, Tesco faced a shortage of ex-fleet models which meant it was unable to deliver on its promise of 3,000 cars for sale on the website with daily new additions.

A statement on the company website reads: “We started Tesco Cars in good faith and we always aim to do a good job for customers. However, following a review of the business model we and Carsite, our partner, have decided that we cannot offer customers a satisfactory range of vehicles and as a result, have decided it is right to close the business.”

Customers with outstanding orders have been given the option of proceeding with their purchase or claiming a full refund on cancellation.

Tesco has also closed Tesco Home Services, its pilot handyman service, as it looks to focus more on its core businesses.
