Templeman named as new Chairman of the British Retail Consortium

Rob Templeman has been appointed as Chairman of the British Retail Consortium. Templeman will succeed Luke Mayhew who will step down from the role on 1 October 2011.

Templeman is currently Chief Executive of Debenhams but will be retiring from the company in September. He is also non-executive Chairman of Gala Coral. Previous roles have included Chairman of Halfords plc, Chief Executive of Homebase Group plc and Chief Executive of Harveys Furnishing plc.

BRC director general Stephen Robertson said: “Rob is a heavyweight in the world of retail. His huge experience and formidable knowledge of the big issues that the sector faces make him an ideal Chairman for the BRC as we work to help create a vibrant and sustainable retail industry for the future. Rob has demonstrated keen support for the work of the BRC and, on a personal level, his wisdom and insight are invaluable. I very much look forward to working with him.

“The BRC has made great strides under the Chairmanship of Luke. His strategic thinking and work on governance have been hugely beneficial, together with his close contact with members. We thank Luke very much for his time and enthusiasm over the last two years.”

Rob Templeman said: “I am really pleased to be asked to Chair the BRC and look forward to working alongside Stephen and the team. Retail is one of the UK’s largest employers. It represents an important part of the country’s economy and the BRC has proven to be the authoritative voice for the industry.”

He added: “The BRC provides an invaluable service to retailers of all different sizes across the sector it also provides a platform for the industry to engage and liaise with one voice to government on the key issues facing the sector; I am delighted to play a part in its future development.”
