Superdrug posts 1.5% rise in like-for-like sales over Christmas

Superdrug enjoyed a 1.5% increase in like-for-like sales over the Christmas period as trade was driven by strong sales of make-up and perfume.

In the nine weeks to 28 December 2013 online sales were also buoyant, rising by 58%.

Superdrug said make-up was one of its top-selling categories as customers purchased cosmetics in preparation for the Christmas party season. Fragrances were also popular with the retailer selling 1.7 million bottles during the period as trade was boosted by strong sales of One Direction’s debut scent Our Moment.

Joey Wat, Superdrug managing director, said: “Our Christmas trading figures show a solid performance during challenging times which is good news as we head into our fiftieth birthday year.

“Adding interest to our high street stores with beauty services, while also investing in the refurbishing of the store estate, sees us return to positive like for like annual growth in 2013, with Christmas trading offering a sparkling end to the year.”

Meanwhile, Superdrug’s sister company Savers has reported a second consecutive year of double digit growth with like-for-like sales rising 10.9% in the year to 28 December 2013.
