Subway has given its support to initiatives proposed by the UK government to put increased reponsibility for litter on takeaway food outlets.
The proposals mean that chains will ne expected to do more to ensure litter from their premises is properly tidied away.
Subway, with over 190 stores throughout the UK and Ireland, said it is committed to initiatives such as regular bin patrols. Subway’s staff also undergo an induction programme, which addresses areas such as refuse management and the wider implications on the environment.
Subway said it welcomes voluntary proposals set out by the Government and is currently in discussion with Defra and ENCAMS (Environmental Campaigns) to give the initiative its full backing.
Subway said that retailers must unite and work together to ensure that there is an ongoing commitment to keep UK streets clean. “Whilst Subway will do its utmost to support this initiative, the general public will also have to play their part to ensure that they do not litter in a bid to help keep the streets clean,” said a statement.
Subway has over 19,800 stores worldwide and by 2010, aims to have opened over 2,000 stores in the UK and Ireland.
