Subway celebrates drive for growth

200th store in the UK & Ireland and 20,000th store worldwide
November 18 2003
Demonstrating its drive for a major share of the takeaway food market, sandwich chain Subway chain is celebrating the achievement of two major milestones.

Its 200th store in the UK and Ireland opened a week after achieving 20,000 stores opened worldwide.
The milestone store was opened by franchisee Craig Munro in Chester. Munro has been a franchisee with Subway for over two years and now operates two stores in te town.
Less than a week earlier, the Subway chain also announced the opening of its 20,000th store worldwide. Twenty stores around the world opened at exactly the same time and so shared the privilege; one was the new Subway store in Hastings operated by franchisees Steve and Julia Adams.
The announcements reflect the culmination of a massive job creation and monetary investment on both sides of the Atlantic. Plans for expansion call for another 1,800 stores in the UK and Ireland by 2010, reflecting the huge growth potential seen for the Subway brand.
Kevin Graham, Subway UK and Ireland area development manager, said: “Although the UK and Ireland represent just 1 per cent of the Subway chain’s overall worldwide store count, 1 per cent of 20,000 is still a significant number.
“The UK and Ireland is seen as the gateway to Europe for Subway restaurants and the franchise chain is going to use the expansion here as an example of best practice and how efficiently and effectively it can be carried out in international markets.”
