Stuart Rose recognised in New Years Honours list
Sir Stuart, 58, is knighted for his services to the retail industry and corporate social responsibility.
Rose joined Marks and Spencer from Arcadia in 2004 and was charged with restoring M&S’s fortunes after shoppers turned their backs on its dowdy and outdated image.
Sir Stuart helped fight off a bid from Philip Green, saying at the time that he would return the M&S share price to 400 pence – the amount which was offered by Green to buy the company. He said: “Naturally I am delighted but it is as much for everyone at M&S as it is for me.”
Other senior retail figures honoured include Richard Bradbury, CEO of River Island, and Maurice Bennett, recognised for his invovement in the fashion industry for more than 50 years. Both recieve CBEs.
OBEs were arwarded to Jasper Conran and Karen Millen, who founded the fashion chain named after her.
