Store Wars for music rivals in Birmingham

Virgin Megastore opens next to HMV
Virgin Megastore has opened one of its biggest UK outlets in Birmingham, throwing down the gauntlet to arch-rival HMV, which trades next door.

The newly-opened Virgin store at the Pavillion Shopping Centre is Birmingham’s biggest-ever music and movie outlet and the fourth largest UK Virgin Megastore overall.
Following the model of Virgin’s other new Megastore at No. 1 Piccadilly, London, which opened in August, the new Birmingham store will stock a similarly large range of CDs, DVDs, games and vinyl – more than a million music tracks in all – and have the same listening posts where customers can sample sounds before they buy.
Virgin’s executive director retail, Simon Douglas, said: “The location is fantastic. Research always shows that when similar types of shop cluster together everyone benefits, customer and retailer alike. Competition keeps all of us on our toes, and the wider choice brings more customers to the location.”
