Starbucks launches reusable coffee cups
The Starbucks coffee chain is to offer customers reusable cups in its stores in a bid to reduce waste and its impact on the environment.
The white cups, which cost £1, are based on the design of the brand’s paper cups and feature its distinctive green and white logo. Made of a “high quality material”, the reusable cups are lighter than the brand’s ceramic tumblers which will still be sold.
Every time a customer uses one of the reusable cups they will be given a 25p discount off their Starbucks drink. During UK Coffee Week next week, an additional 25p will be donated to Project Waterfall, a charity working to improve access to safe water, hygiene and sanitation in African coffee-growing countries.
The reusable cups have already been launched in the US and Canada following a trial across several hundred Starbucks stores in the US. They will be available in selected stores in the UK from today, to be followed by a wider roll-out.
Never Miss a Retail Update!Ian Cranna, vice-president of UK marketing for Starbucks, said: “We know that our customers really care about saving money and doing their bit for the environment; between 2008 and 2012 the number of people using a Starbucks reusable tumbler increased by 235% and our new reusable cup is a low-cost, high-impact way to help make a difference on reducing waste.”
