Slow start on Good Friday heralds anxious Easter for retailers
FootFall has today released figures indicating that Good Friday saw a fall in high street shoppers of -4.3% on Good Friday 2005.
Natasha Burton, spokesperson for FootFall comments: “Despite the numerous discounts in the latter part of the week attempting to drawing shoppers indoors, the anticipated warmer weather which arrived on Friday proved more enticing to consumers. The decline in the number of high street shoppers of 4.3% compared to Good Friday 2004, suggests that tough trading conditions are continuing to hamper retailers.
“The deficit is in line with our expectations and continuing the trend we have seen during key retail events so far in 2006, but this will not be a comfort to retailers who are looking to this key period to gauge if a resurgence in spending is on the horizon and whether shoppers are looking to emerge from the chilly first quarter with a renewed appetite to shop,” she concludes.
