Gerald Ratner’s online venture challenged
June 29 2002
Jewellery retailer Signet is taking legal action to prevent former chief executive Gerald Ratner from using his name to sell jewellery on the Internet.
Ratner left the company a decade ago after famously joking that some of the products were “crap.” He has been talking about a new venture for some time, and last month announced the launch of a business called Ratners Online.
A Signet statement said: “The Ratners name is owned by Signet and use of that name by a competitor is bound to cause confusion in the marketplace. It would be damaging to the company’s interests to allow any existing or potential competitor to use the brand to compete against the company.”
