Shopper numbers grow as summer beckons

Figures released today by FootFall, show an increase in the number of people visiting retail destinations last week, representing the first week-on-week growth in shopper numbers to date for May 2006.

While the national figures demonstrate an increase in shopper numbers of 3.5%, the Town Centre Index shows a lesser increase of 2.8%, reflecting the broader trend in the sector.
Natasha Burton, a spokesperson for FootFall comments: “Shoppers have clearly not been deterred by the unpredictable weather and have, instead, travelled to retail destinations rather than pursuing other leisure activities that may be affected by sudden Spring showers.
“In addition, retailers have stepped up World Cup marketing campaigns and consumers have begun to respond as the rush for branded merchandise and big ticket items, such as large format TVs, continues in the build up to the tournament. Many consumers are already planning ahead for summer holidays and are beginning to browse for summer clothing, holiday packages and associated items.
“Looking ahead, we would expect footfall levels to increase further over the coming weeks, though the warmer weather likely to appear may threaten the momentum retailers will be hoping for. For retailers to succeed, therefore, it is crucial to capitalise on the underlying confidence currently found on the High Street and ensure that they capture shoppers’ imaginations with relevant World Cup promotions and marketing activity, rather than compete with the tournament for attention,”
