Sephora aims to ramp up UK openings

The chief executive of Sephora has said he wants to ramp up its business in the UK in the next two to three years as it looks to compete against the likes of Boots.

Speaking to The Times, Guillaume Motte said: “We’re probably looking in the next two to three years to have at least 20 stores in the UK.”

The beauty retailer is also looking to expand its online channel.

Owned by luxury group LVMH, Sephora has more than 3,000 stores in 35 countries, six of which are in the UK.

The retailer began opening sites here last year following an 18 year absence prior to which it struggled to establish itself due to competition from retailers such as Debenhams and House of Fraser.

The retailer currently has shops in Westfield Stratford, Westfield White City, Manchester and two in Newcastle, as well as a store in Birmingham which opened last week.

Speaking of the UK retail landscape, Motte said: ” I know that sometimes we say that retail, and especially retail in the UK, has been doom and gloom.

“My answer to this always ‘boring retail is dead but exciting retail is alive and really thriving.'”
