Sales down at WH Smith

Book and stationery retailer WH Smith has reported a fall in sales during the first ten weeks of its financial year.

Total group sales declined by 3% in the ten weeks to 10 November while like-for-like sales were down 4% compared to the same period last year.

Total sales at the retailer’s high street stores were down 5% as were like-for like sales. The group’s travel division, which includes newsagents in airports and railway stations, saw flat total sales while like-for-like sales were down 4%.

In a trading statement, WH Smith said its financial position was in line with market expectations, adding: “Whilst the current climate continues to be challenging, we remain a resilient business and are well positioned for continued profitable growth.”
