Sainsbury’s strengthens management team

Trading and marketing directors apointed
Sainsbury’s chief executive Justin king has shuffled his management team with two senior appointments.

Stephen Nelson moves from his current role as trading director to become marketing director, while Mike Coupe joins the supermarket operator as trading director. Both will sit on Sainsbury’s operating board.
Coupe joins from Big Food Group where he was managing director of Iceland. He has also previously worked at Tesco and Asda. Nelson joined Sainsbury’s Supermarkets in July 2003 from Diageo.
King said: “Stephen has been at the forefront of change in trading at Sainsbury’s and I am delighted that he will be leading our product quality and innovation agenda in his new role in marketing.
“I am delighted that Mike will be joining Sainsbury’s at this important time for the company. His trading and retailing experience makes him an invaluable addition to the team.
“Mike will join Sainsbury’s in due course. In the meantime Stephen will assume responsibility for both areas.
“These two appointments will strengthen our operating board. Mike is an experienced retailer and trader who has worked in the UK grocery market for over 20 years.
“Stephen’s knowledge of the sector and his extensive experience in consumer goods and of working at Sainsbury’s makes him ideal for the marketing director role.”
