Sainsbury’s shops at Carpetright for new finance boss
Darren Shapland to join supermarket group
Sainsbury’s has announced that Darren Shapland, currently group finance director at flooring retailer Carpetright, is to join the supermarket group as chief financial officer.
Sainsbury’s said that Shapland, 38, has a strong track record in retail brands, having previously been finance director for Superdrug as well as spending 12 years in a range of roles with fashion group Arcadia, formerly Burton Group.
He replaces Roger Matthews, who announced his intention to leave in October and is staying with the business until the until after the preliminary results annnouncement in May. Shapland’s start date has still to be agreed.
Justin King, Sainsbury’s chief executive said: “I’m delighted that Darren will be joining Sainsbury’s. He has excellent experience in the retail sector and has undertaken a number of hands-on and broad financial roles. He will be a great asset to Sainsbury’s and the company’s management team as we continue to implement the plans outlined last October.”
Shapland said: “I believe the Sainsbury’s brand has great potential and look forward to being able to play a key role in the company’s future plans.”
Philip Hampton, Sainsbury’s chairman said: “I’m pleased to welcome Darren to the plc board and look forward to working with him. I’d also like to thank Roger Matthews for his significant contribution to Sainsbury’s during a time of great change for the company.”

Chairman and chief executive Lord Harris said: “Darren has done an excellent job for Carpetright and has been an important member of the senior team. We know though that Sainsbury’s offers him a great opportunity to further develop his career and wish him every success in this new position.”
