Sainsbury’s overtake Asda as number 2 supermarket in the UK

Recent figures from Market Research company ACNielsen confirm that Sainsbury’s have continued to improve their performance, and in the latest 12 weeks have overtaken Asda to take the number 2 slot

The figures, based on 12 weeks sales through to 25th March 2006 confirm that Sainsbury’s market share, based on ACNielsen Homescan Total Till Spend, has risen to 15.3% compared to Asda at 15.2%, driven by a strong performance throughout quarter 4.

Eleni Nicholas, Group MD for ACNielsen UK and Ireland said, “Sainsbury’s have been working hard to improve performance, with lower prices and improved availability, as recognized by their customers. In addition we are seeing a trend towards healthy eating, and traditional Sainsbury’s shoppers have always recognized the importance of a balanced diet.”
ACNielsen’s Homescan panel shows that Sainsbury’s shoppers are visiting the store more frequently and over the last 12 months Sainsbury’s has attracted more shoppers. The combination of more visits and more shoppers has contributed significantly to Sainsbury’s growth in sales – up 6.5% excluding petrol, according to their fourth quarter trading statement.
