Sainsbury’s launches in-store Pet Hub trial

The Sainsbury’s supermarket chain has launched a trial of Pet Hubs in 20 of its stores.

Up and running in time for Christmas, they will offer customers a choice of pet products and brands that can often only be found in specialist pet shops and veterinary surgeries.

Products will include food, accessories and health and hygiene products for cats, dogs and small animals such as rabbits, birds and fish. The retailer is adding over 100 new lines to its range including Petface, Frontline and Lintbells.

One of the trial stores will  feature an Argos Pay@Browse station to enable customers  to browse and buy Argos’s range of pet products.

Sainsbury’s said initial feedback on the hubs has been positive. If successful, the offering will be extended to more stores and online.

The retailer has also launched an extended range of pet food products in time for Christmas as it looks to increase its share of the UK’s £4.4 billion pet market. These include an own brand range of mince pies for dogs and pet-friendly Christmas meals and treats.

In addition, the retailer’s Tu clothing brand is offering Christmas jumpers for dogs for the first time this year.

Sam Burston, director of grocery at Sainsbury’s said: “Christmas is a family time and we know that our customers see their pets as a treasured part of their family. Our mission is to make our customers’ lives as easy and convenient as possible; by bringing more fun pet toys and treats to our stores customers can now buy gifts for the whole family under one roof.”
