Sainsbury’s faces legal action for excess packaging

The case is believed to be the first time a major supermarket has been prosecuted over packaging levels.

The charges, which were brought by trading standard officers in Lincolnshire, allege that company breached 2003 regulations, which prohibit the use of excess packaging.

Lincolnshire County Council allege Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference Slow Matured Ultimate Beef Roasting Joint, is overwrapped.
The luxury joint is packaged in plastic shrink wrap, and then placed inside a plastic tray, before being covered with a plastic lid and surrounded with a cardboard sleeve.
Sainsbury’s said it is “surprised” at the action and added that the packaging of the meat joint had been reduced by 53% since February.
