Sainsbury’s completes Shaw’s sale

Albertson’s takes control of US supermarket chains
Sainsbury’s has completed the $2,475m sale of its US Shaw’s Supermarkets business to Albertson’s.
With no conditions imposed by the US regulatory authorities, the sales has been completed ahead of schedule.
Sainsbury’s has received $2,107m in cash, which its has earmarked for store improvements and acquisitions in the UK. The remainder of the sale price relates to $368m in store leases assumed by Albertson’s.
The 202-store Shaw’s chain, the number two supermarket business in the New England area, has been owned by Sainsbury’s for 20 years.
The acquisition brings Albertson’s US store numbers to more than 2,500.
