Retro toys dominate as searches for toys double in the run up to Christmas

Hitwise has revealed that searches for toys doubled during November as the gift buying season began in earnest.

Guess Who Extra, an updated electronic version of the classic 1980’s game, was the most searched-for game during November, accounting for one in every 40 toy searches.
Lego, popular since the 1940’s, was the most searched-for toy brand. Four of the ten most searched-for toys during November were produced by Lego, which were helped by the toy company’s big film tie-ups with Star Wars and Batman. Continuing the retro theme, Meccano, a model construction kit most of our grandparents would remember, was the fastest growing toy brand in November, with the Meccano Spykee WiFi Robot its fastest growing product.
“Established toy brands, many of which have been around for decades, dominate the list of most searched-for toys this Christmas,” comments Robin Goad, Director of Research for Hitwise in the UK. “However, these brands have not remained popular by standing still. The most successful ones have re-invented their well-loved toys by integrating new technology. Great examples of this include Lego, now a major video games publisher; Meccano, which has integrated the latest WiFi Internet technology into its products; and Fisher Price, with its Kid Tough digital camera for children.”
