Retailers deployed carrier pigeons during freak weather

Major retailers have revealed how they used carrier pigeons to maintain contact with stores during the snow.

The birds were used to carry vital information such as financial updates, stock requirements and staffing levels as the snow shut down roads, brought down phone lines and interferred with internet connections.

Pigeons were used on a size basis with smaller retailers using the common ‘Columbiformes’ able to carry small documents whilst bigger retailers used the larger ‘Rock Dove’ capable of carrying items as large as CD’s.

A spokesman close to the initative said “The birds were vital in the continuing operation of many retailers during what was a terrible weather event.

“It certainly brings new meaning to ‘Twitter'” he added.
