Retail sales up 0.2% month-on-month in June

UK retail sales volumes rose by 0.2% in June from May, helped by discounts offered by department stores and clearance sales. The 0.2% month-on-month increase follows stronger growth of 2.1% in May.

According to figures released by The Office for National Statistics, retail sales volumes were up 2.2% on June 2012 with the main sources of upward pressure coming from non-store retailers and department stores.

Department stores sales grew at their fastest pace since March 2012, rising 3% month-on-month.

The Office for National Statistics said: “Feedback from department stores suggested sales had increased due to promotions and consumers buying clearance items across a wide range of products.”

Weekly spending across all retail sectors in the month reached £6.9 billion, up from £6.8 billion in May, the ONS said.
