Retail/FMCG trend predictions for 2013 Complimentary report from the Retail Bulletin
The Retail Bulletin and ReasearchFarm have teamed up to produce the 60-page report containing Retail/FMCG trend predictions for 2013.
The report covers key developments in politics, economics, the social sphere, technology, the legal domain and the environment – and what it all means for the Consumer Goods and Retail industries.
No one can predict the future and of course neither can we. Nevertheless we have teased out some common themes that we believe will influence 2013 and beyond. Once again we have adopted a PESTLE framework, looking at trends driving and inhibiting the evolution of the retail sector in the EU and beyond.
In terms of economics, 2013 looks only marginally better than 2012, as the world still grapples with the fallout and after-shocks of the crisis of 2008. We believe that one of the major issues in 2013 will be the supply chain and describe how social change leads to a more customer centric supply chain, in the west driven by demand for unique, personalised and local product, in the east for more aspirational product for which production needs to become more domestically based.
Technological change seems to be taking somewhat of a breather in 2013 with the rapid advancements in 2011 and 2012. Last year’s big hype NFC failed to deliver, as we predicted, but we are more positive about the potential of smart TVs and Big Data. In any case the mobile revolution in all its shapes and forms is set to continue. Immediacy will be a big trend in 2013 cutting across boundaries, retailers will try to remove any barriers from the shopping process and speed up conversions and check outs through AR capabilities, QR codes and direct CTAs, as well as same day delivery to move closer to offer a ‘one click shopping’ experience.
Never Miss a Retail Update! In the legal sphere the EU is set to tackle issues in the digital world in 2013, such as dispute resolution and the right to privacy and to be forgotten, other areas will include health & wellness legislation from claims management around ingredients to taxation and minimum pricing.
Lastly, in environmental domain fracking is the hot, controversial topic for 2013 whereas for retailers and FMCG companies once again the supply chain will move into sharper focus. Key topics will be load sharing, load utilisation and the move to same day delivery and what this means for a truly customer centric supply chain.
We hope that you enjoy our take on where we believe things are headed in 2013 and as always we would be more than happy to receive your feedback. Please remember, no one can predict the future!
