Reading the runes: Asda’s next boss?
UK press are backing Bond
Asda chief operating officer Andy Bond is the UK press’s front runner for the top job at Asda following the resignation of chief executive Tony DeNunzio.
The Times speculates that while it is possible that Wal-Mart will parachute in an American recruit, retailers and analysts believe Bond, who is largely responsible for the dramatic expansion of George clothing, will get the top job. His main rival in the UK would have been Richard Baker, who left the business in May 2003 to join Boots.
The Guardian points out that Bond took control of the George clothing brand when creator George Davies resigned. Under his guidance the brand has gone from strength to strength and is now opening standalone high street outlets. Trading director Angela Spindler, 42, will also be a candidate. Ms Spindler previously worked for Mars and Cadbury Schweppes.
The Financial Times speculates that the formal announcement that Bond will step into DeNunzio’s shoes will be made within 10 days.
The Daily Telegraph suggests that only Bond’s relative inexperience as chief operating officer might work against him. It quotes an ‘Asda insider’ who pointed out that Bond has only been in his role for the past six months.
