Queensgate achieves industry first award

Queensgate Shopping Centre in Peterborough has become the first shopping centre in the UK to have achieved the newly revised ISO 14001:2015 accreditation for its environmental management.

The centre’s environmental department has been awarded with the certificate which is an update of the ISO14001:2004.

Queensgate said it had chosen to achieve the voluntary standard as part of its commitment to the environment that is embedded within the culture of the management team.

The revisions to the Environmental Management System were introduced in September 2015 and Queensgate reviewed and implemented all the required changes within four months.

Carol Wakelin, environmental manager at Queensgate, explained: “It is a fantastic achievement to have secured this accreditation in just four months; this reflects our on-going efforts to position Queensgate Shopping Centre at the forefront of energy and waste management. The criteria are extremely rigorous but an important necessity for businesses to undertake to protect our environment and minimise our impact on it.”

Claire Yeadon, asset manager at Lend Lease, added: “Environmental issues are of the upmost importance to us and Queensgate is hugely successful in responding to changing criteria and delivering successful initiatives to reduce their carbon footprint across the centre. Queensgate is an award-winning model and the team deliver fantastic results from the Growing Greener Pledge to the ISO 14001:2015.”

Energy management experts from more than 60 countries developed the ISO 14001 standard which was created to help companies to cut energy consumption, reduce costs and meet stringent environmental requirements. Recognised across the globe, it is one of the highest standards that can be achieved.
