Poundland to recruit 2,000 temporary staff during festive period

Discount retailer Poundland has announced that it will be recruiting 2,000 temporary staff to work in its stores over the Christmas period.

Jim McCarthy, CEO, said: “We need on average five or six extra colleagues in each store to help us cope with the busiest time of the year. The response so far has been fantastic; we’re looking for applicants with enthusiasm and determination, and people who are hard working to help deliver amazing value and service to our customers.”

The retailer said that people looking for permanent jobs would be encouraged by the fact that almost 500 of last year’s temporary Christmas staff had now been offered permanent employment in Poundland stores.

Poundland confirmed that 4 million customers now visit its stores every week, up from 3.5 million recorded in the last financial year. The growth has been driven by new store openings and a store acquisition programme. The retailer said it expects this number to increase to nearer 5 million in the weeks before Christmas
