Poundland appoints Andrew Higginson as non-exec chairman

Poundland, the single price discount retailer, has appointed former Tesco director Andrew Higginson as non-executive chairman.

He will succeed current chairman Colin Smith OBE who will remain on the Poundland board as a non-executive director.

Jim McCarthy, Poundland’s  chief executive, said the company would benefit from Higginson’s strategic skills and retail experience as it  continues to grow the business in the UK and Ireland, and evaluate other opportunities for growth.

Commenting on his appointment Higginson said: “I am excited to be joining Poundland as Chairman and look forward to working with Jim and the team as the company continues its ambitious growth strategy.  The company has always impressed me with its focus on delivering value to customers and I believe that there is significant potential to develop and grow Poundland further.”

Earlier this month Poundland said it was on track to open at least 60 new stores in the current financial year as it reported like-for like sales growth of 2.3% in its full-year results.
