Plans for fashion retail hub approved by Hackney Council
Plans have been approved by Hackney Council for a multi-million pound fashion retail hub in the east London borough.
A joint venture between Manhattan Loft Corporation and Chatham Works Limited, The Hackney Fashion Hub will include a new fashion retail centre and will also offer apprenticeships, training programmes and a stitching academy for designers.
The hub will be developed around the Burberry outlet store in Chatham Place, E9. The proposals also include the redevelopment of 12 empty railway arches in Morning Lane which will be converted into fashion retail units and cafes.
It is hoped that the scheme will create up to 200 jobs for local residents and also attract more visitors and investment for the area.
Never Miss a Retail Update!“The go-ahead for The Hackney Fashion Hub is great news for Hackney and for London as the fashion capital of the world,” said Harry Handelsman, chief executive of Manhattan Loft Corporation. “We are delighted that these visionary plans have been granted permission. We can now start delivering the plans that will create a new fashion destination that will provide new jobs in the area and extra footfall to existing local shops.”
Mayor of London Boris Johnson added: “It is great news for Hackney that a major new fashion hub has got the green light, helping to put this vibrant area on the map as a retail destination and providing support for aspiring young designers to boot.
“This is part of an exciting wider economic regeneration of Hackney, including a £2 million investment from my regeneration fund, which will completely revamp the high street, and create hundreds of jobs and training opportunities for local people.”
