PETA claims victory after Fortnum & Mason backs down on selling foie gras in Dubai store
Animal rights campaign group PETA is claiming a victory after announcing that upmarket department store Fortnum & Mason has scrapped plans to sell foie gras at its new Dubai store which is due to open later this month.
The news comes just a few days after the release of a PETA advertisement which featured Sir Roger Moore calling for a boycott of the new shop due to Fortnum’s plans to sell the food product.
Foie gras has been criticised by animal rights campaigners as the production process involves ducks or geese being force-fed grain multiple times a day which PETA says causes “unbearable pain” for the birds.
PETA also says that foie gras is not halal as it does not meet the requirements of Islamic law which state that animals must not be under stress or in discomfort before slaughter.
Never Miss a Retail Update!Sir Roger said: “Fortnum & Mason’s decision not to sell foie gras in Dubai represents a significant step in getting this ‘torture in a tin’ out of all its stores.
“The company is tacitly acknowledging that this vile victual has no place in its future plans, and the next logical step would be for Fortnum to make this a companywide policy.”
The new Dubai shop is Fortnum & Mason’s third store and its first outside of the UK.
