GENERAL MERCHANDISE NEWS

Paperchase enjoys strong Christmas

Paperchase, the design-led stationery and greetings cards retailer, increased its like-for-like sales by 3.1% year-on-year in the five weeks to 27 December.

Total sales climbed by 6.5% to £28.4 million with online sales rising by 26%. International concession sales increased by 6.8%.

Timothy Melgund, Paperchase chief executive, said: “Paperchase enjoyed a strong Christmas trading period, ending a year where we consolidated our position on the High Street as a key destination for design-led stationery, cards wrap and gifts. More of our sales were at full price during the year, proving our customers really understand and appreciate the innovation and value for money of our product offering.”

The trading means that in the year to date, total sales have risen by 6.9% to £108.7 million while like-for-like sales have edged up 3.3%.

Never Miss a Retail Update!

Online sales climbed by 29.8% following the revamp of the retailer’s website and the launch of a click and collect service in 2014.

Last year, Paperchase opened 11 new standalone stores and refurbished three existing stores in the UK. It also launched five concessions Europe. The retailer said it is planning to open a “similar or greater” number of new stores in the UK 2015. In 2014, Paperchase also embarked on partnership with US stationery giant Staples which is producing “encouraging” initial results.

Melgund added: “We are committed to building on our achievements last year and head into 2015 with real momentum.”
