Oxford Street flagstone and sign to be auctioned for charity

The New West End Company and Westminster Council have agreed to auction off an Oxford Street flagstone and an iconic Oxford Street sign for charity.

Both items will be sold in an eBay auction and the funds raised will be donated to the Evening Standard’s Dispossessed fund.

As Westminster City Council begins work on a £1.7million makeover of the pedestrian area of the East Oxford Street, which receives over 200 million visits a year, shoppers from New York to Beijing will for the first time be given the opportunity to snap up a piece of one of the world’s most renowned shopping high streets.

The Oxford Street pavement stone is being replaced as part of a streetscape improvement plan which will be carried out over the next thirteen months. The scheme will be completed in May 2012 in time for the Olympics.

Richard Dickinson, chief executive of New West End Company, who is running the marathon this year for the Standard’s campaign says, “Over £2billion is being invested in the West End over the next five years and this hugely important programme of pavement improvements will enhance one of our key gateways to the West End.”

New West End Company represents 600 retailers in London’s West End.
