GENERAL MERCHANDISE NEWS

Oxford Street closes after New Look blaze.

More than 100 fire fighters and 20 fire engines were sent to the New Look shop on the south side of Oxford Street last night.

Shoppers and staff were evacuated from the store and nearby buildings, and police closed a quarter-mile section of the normally busy road between Oxford Circus and Wells Street.
It is expected to remain closed until at least noon today and buildings within that area will be inaccessible while the cordon remains in place.

Oxford Circus and Tottenham Court Road tube stations are expected to remain open, police said. The blaze apparently broke out in second floor offices above New Look, which is next door to Marks and Spencer, just before 7pm.
It also left the third and floors of the building heavily smoke-logged. Scotland Yard said no casualties were reported.
