OFT consumer rights campaign kicks off

North East shoppers offered hot tips
June 18 2002
A major OFT shoppers’ rights campaign will start with a roadshow at the Metro Centre in Gateshead.

The OFT will be visiting the centre on June 19 to distribute a new pocket guide on shoppers’ rights, called Hot Shopping Tips. Local Trading Standards officers will offer free help and advice to shoppers on anything from rogue traders to internet shopping.
The OFT’s regional roadshow programme aims to raise awareness among local consumers of their rights on the High Street, so they can make informed decisions when buying goods and services.
The guide includes advice on product quality and fitness for purpose, refunds on faulty goods, credit card and home shopping rights.
The OFT is also holding a seminar in Newcastle for small and medium sized businesses to explain its role, listen to views on how markets are working and help with understanding of competition and consumer protection laws.
Penny Boys, Deputy Director General of Fair Trading said: “The OFT wants to know first-hand how markets are working for consumers in the North East and across the UK. An informed consumer is in a better position to get what they want. If you know your shopping rights and shop around, you are more likely to get the best deal.”
