Ocado to open new distribution spoke

Ocado has exchanged contracts to acquire a 2.4 acre site in Bristol for a new distribution spoke. The acquisition will enable the online grocery retailer to expand its service to an additional 1 million homes.

Construction on the 40,000 sq ft shed will begin shortly, with the site set to open in March 2011.  At peak capacity, the distribution spoke will employ up to 170 people and process 10,000 orders per week.  Ocado will operate 60 vans from the site, delivering to the Cardiff, Bristol, Bath, Taunton and Cheltenham areas.

Welcoming the news, Charlotte Leslie, MP for Bristol North West said: “At a time when things are sadly very difficult for local families and bread-winners, I’m delighted that an injection of new jobs is coming to the area. Despite the economic situation we find ourselves in, growth is coming from the business sector and I wish Ocado and new employees every success.”
