Ocado pulls foie gras from its virtual shelves
Ocado is the latest retailer to stop selling foie gras after an approach by animal welfare group PETA.
The grocer is following in the footsteps of Selfridges and Harvey Nichols by pulling the goose liver speciality from its virtual shelves.
In recent years organisations such as The British Academy of Film and Television Arts, Wimbledon, Lord’s Cricket Ground and the Royal Shakespeare Company have also pledged not to serve or sell the dish.
Campaigners argue that the production of foie gras inflicts unnecessary suffering on geese by force feeding them to enlarge their livers.
Ocado is believed to have stocked a foie gras product as part of its Reflets de France range.
PETA manager Mimi Bekhechi said: “British opinion is overwhelmingly against the cruelty of foie gras production. By making the decision to stop stocking foie gras, Ocado has proved itself to be a modern, ethically minded company.”
