GENERAL MERCHANDISE NEWS

No happy returns for Clintons

Tough high street conditions and longer than expected supplier delivery schedules hamper the company’s progress as it pins hope on a bouyant christmas.

Like for like sales for the Clinton brand were down 1.9 per cent for the 24 weeks to 17 July 2005. In the same period like for like sales for the Birthdays brand, which were down 2.3 per cent for the first 16 weeks of the financial period were down 1.7 per cent.
New product ranges for the Birthdays business are taking longer to arrive than expected and the company does not expect Birthdays to break even at the operating profit level in this financial year.
