Nisa expands into education retail with acquisition of university campus stores

Symbol group Nisa has taken its first step into the world of education retail by recruiting two new stores on University of York campuses.

Both former Costcutter stores, the first is based at the university campus in Market Square and has a turnover of £2.3 million while the second is at Halifax College and has a turnover of £600,000. A third store is currently in the pipeline at Heslington East campus.

Nisa worked with the university for six months in planning the move which included revamping the stores both internally and externally.

The stores’ diverse range of stock is firmly targeted at students and includes items such as lab coats, goggles, rice cookers and hoodies.

Never Miss a Retail Update!

Jon Greenwood, University of York commercial director, said: “I have had no end of support from Nisa which resulted in a smooth and easy journey. Their team has been very hands on, such as visiting our opening day, listening to our opinions and helping us to upgrade the shop to meet consumer demand.

“We have cut out the middle charge from Costcutter by joining Nisa and therefore we can ensure we are offering the best deals we can for our students.”

Victoria Lockie, head of support and shared service at Nisa, added: “We made sure the transition to Nisa was easy and precise as we covered every execution of the process over a six month plan.

“Whilst working together we built up a relationship of trust which is something Nisa prides itself on. We have worked with the university to improve the store to ensure the consumer journey is enhanced and it is already experiencing a positive effect on sales.“
