Convenience store operator Budgens has received a takeover approach from Irish food group Musgrave. The privately-owned Irish company is already Budgens biggest shareholder, with about 45 per cent of shares.
Budgens owns more than 200 stores, concentrated in the South East and Midlands, including supermarkets and forecourt stores as well as c-stores. Musgrave operates the badged Irish retail brands Supervalu and Centra, supplied by its wholesaling arm, which gives it around a quarter of the Irish grocery market.
