MP’s attack supermarket dominance
Wholesalers and independent newsagents Britain are “not expected to survive” past 2015 because of the unchecked growth of supermarkets, say the damning preliminary findings of an investigation into the retail sector by an influential group of MPs according to a report in The Sunday Telegraph
The High Street Britain 2015 report, seen by the Sunday Telegraph, shows the disdain in which supermarkets are viewed in Parliament. The report claims that the grocery sector will have “dramatically altered” by 2015 if supermarkets are not restrained. The Office of Fair Trading is already carrying out a probe into whether the supermarkets should be referred to the Competition Commission for a full inquiry.
The report says the increased size and buying power of the big four supermarkets will lead to a “collapse” in the supply chain as independent wholesalers are pushed out of the market. The group of MPs heard that Tesco, the UK’s leading retailer, was able to get products for 10 to 20 per cent less than independent chains even when ordering similar amounts.
