Morrisons to open Bury distribution centre to support C-store expansion
Morrisons is to open a new distribution centre in Bury to support the expansion of its M Local convenience chain in the north of England.
The supermarket will lease the 150,000 sq ft site for five years. Set to open in October, the facility will be operated by logistics specialist Wincanton which has been awarded a five year contract for combined warehouse and transport operations.
The move follows last year’s launch of Morrisons’ first-ever dedicated convenience distribution centre in London where Wincanton manages both transport and warehousing
Jerome Saint-Marc, development director at Morrisons, said: “The growing demand for our convenience offering meant it made perfect sense to replicate our success in London with a similar operation in the north.”
Never Miss a Retail Update!Eric Born, chief executive of Wincanton, added: “We are delighted to be expanding our partnership with Morrisons with the announcement of this five year contract.”
Morrisons plans to open 100 convenience stores by the end of the year as it looks to grow its presence in the sector. Earlier this year, the supermarket acquired 49 Blockbuster stores and seven former Jessops to convert into M Local stores.
