Morrisons to fund 1,000 university places for aspiring store managers
Morrisons is planning to fund up to 1,000 university degrees in a bid to recruit its next generation of store managers.
The supermarket will be sign students up throughout the next 18 months for the three year foundation degrees degrees offered by the University of Bradford. Although the degrees will be aimed at training future Morrisons managers, the supermarket said that the skills and qualifications gained will be transferable to any other retail business. However, if the students join Morrisons at the end of their course there is the potential for them to becomer managers within seven years.
The students will be required to study from home for eight or more hours a week as well as attending intensive courses at centres in their local area. They will also need to work for six months at a Morrisons store before starting their degree.
Norman Pickavance, director of human resources at Morrisons, commented: “This is an opportunity for young people who have the right drive and attitude to reach senior management levels in the company. It offers a genuine alternative to self-funded university qualifications.”
The scheme is expected to cost Morrisons up to £4 million.
