As the UK supermarket sector awaits the imminent announcement of which will be allowed to bid for Safeway, Morrisons is still growing its market share organically.
The Bradford based chain is expected to be cleared to bid for Safeway, while rivals Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Asda are likely to be either blocked outright or face stringent conditions.
The latest till receipt data from market research firm TNS shows that in the 12 weeks to September 14, Morrisons increased its share of the UK grocery to 6.1 per cent. Market leader Tesco extended its lead to a 27.1 per cent share, while Asda climbed to 16.9 per cent.
Sainsbury’s, recently overtaken by Asda as the second-biggest supermarket chain in terms of total sales, saw its market share fell to 16.1 per cent from 17.2 per cent in the same period a year ago. Safeway’s share slipped from to 9.7 per cent a year ago from 9.2 per cent.
