Morrisons launches online grocery site

Morrisons has launched its highly anticipated online grocery website.

Having gone live today, the website has begun taking customer orders ahead of the supermarket making its first deliveries across much of the Midlands on 10 January. Deliveries will then be extended to other parts of the country throughout 2014.

Morrisons said the new grocery site will build on its proposition of “fresh food prepared by butchers, bakers and fishmongers”. Services will include customers being able to choose how thickly their steak is cut with orders prepared by Morrisons Academy-trained butchers at the supermarket’s manufacturing sites.

The new online offering will also include an expert review rosette rating system that gives customers “an honest assessment of the quality and seasonality of every item of produce”. There will also be a doorstep check that allows customers to check the freshness of the products being delivered before they accept them.

Never Miss a Retail Update!

Customers will pay either £1, £3 or £5 for delivery depending on whether their shopping is delivered at peak, off-peak or standard times. They will also be given the choice of one-hour delivery slots.

Morrisons expects to be covering 50% of the UK by the beginning of 2015.

Dalton Philips, chief executive of Morrisons, said: “This fresh food offer will be the closest thing on the internet to being in a store and selecting food yourself. Customers do have concerns about buying fresh food online and today we believe we’ve come up with the answer.”

Simon Thompson, managing director for online food at Morrisons, added: “We have spent a lot of time with customers and that journey doesn’t stop here. We would love the customers to use the on-site feedback buttons to let us know how we can make our offer even better.”

Morrisons has launched the service with online grocer Ocado in a deal which enables the supermarket to benefit from Ocado’s technology, logistics and distribution operations.
